EXERCISE OF THE MONTH: TURKISH GET UPS

Have you ever wondered how you can make getting up from a lying down position more challenging? Sure you have. Well, those crazy Turks have come up with a DELIGHTful (see what I did there) way of doing this that involves holding a Kettlebell whilst looking like you’re impersonating a transformer. And who doesn’t want to be a transformer? Side note: I’ve realised that I have now referenced power rangers and transformers in two of my most recent posts, I’m going to have to get creative to include other childhood favourites, Ghostbusters, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…

Why get up?

In all seriousness, Turkish get-ups are a great exercise for anyone needing to work on shoulder stability, proprioception and core strength. Essentially the arm should remain pointing straight up in the air throughout the exercise as your body moves into each position. This requires the rotator cuff to work as the shoulder rotates to accommodate the new position. The exercise is great as not only does it train hip flexion and extension, you also get a degree of internal/external rotation. Add to this the fact you have a heavy weight above your head for a long time, you will be breathing like a crazy person.
